This copycat recipe for McDonald's Shamrock Shake is super tasty and easy to make with only four ingredients.
Honestly, I can't remember the last time I had one of McDonald's Shamrock Shakes. In fact, it was probably over 40 years ago.
I grew up in a small town where there was only one fast food restaurant nearby and even that technically was in a different town and it was a Burger King.
If we wanted McDonald's, we would have to make a special trip. They had two locations. One was right off the highway in a small shopping center next to a clothing store; which was about 15 minutes away.
And the other was in a small indoor mall; which was about 30 minutes away.
Going to McDonald's as a kid was always a special treat; and was usually tied to a clothes shopping trip twice a year. Usually at the end of August before school started and then again at the end of February or beginning of March when the Spring fashions came out.
At the end of each trip, our Mom would take us to the fast food restaurant for burgers, fries and a milkshake. Vanilla was my favorite, but when it was Spring, it was definitely the Shamrock Shake; which was a green mint milkshake.
Back in the 1990's they did away with the shake, but they brought it back in the 2000's since so many people requested it. The shake is super easy to make at home too.
How do you make a Shamrock Shake?
For this recipe you'll need vanilla bean ice cream, milk, mint extract and green food coloring. I used peppermint extract, but you can use spearmint as well.
Add all ingredients to a blender. Slowly blend until the ice cream breaks up; then turn up the speed to the highest setting to blend altogether. Pour the shake into your favorite glass; then garnish as desired. I chose to use whipped cream, maraschino cherries and sprinkles.
This Shamrock Shake tasted just like I remembered as a kid and made a special treat for my family. Green milkshakes are also a fun way to celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick's Day holiday. ~Enjoy!
