A close up of a martini glass with Grasshopper cocktail

The classic Grasshopper Cocktail made with Creme de Menthe, Creme de Cocoa and heavy cream is still a favorite and would make a tasty drink for your St. Patrick's Day celebrations!

I grew up in the 1970's and if you've ever seen that show; yes, people really dressed like that! "Basement bars" were also a big thing back then and on weekends you would find neighbors gathering from house to house making up the latest drink concoctions like the Pink Squirrel or the Grasshopper Cocktail.

The cocktail got its name from the green color and was said to have been created in 1918 in New Orleans. It was mostly popular back in the 50's and 60's; which is why its popularity still carried over to my childhood in the early 1970's.

All the neighborhood kids used to think it was so fun that our parents would be drinking a green cocktail. Of course, we didn't get to taste any of it ourselves, but to us it looked like the grown up version of a Shamrock Shake.

Every year, I try to make a new recipe to celebrate the holidays. Some of my favorite St. Patrick's Day sweet treats so far have been Bailey's Irish Cream Rice Pudding, Irish Coffee and Chocolate Chip Mint Pie.

This year I decided I'd bring back the classic Grasshopper Cocktail to share with you. Not only is easy to make, contains 3 ingredients and is rich and creamy, it's GREEN to celebrate the holiday!

How do you make the Grasshopper Cocktail?

For this recipe you'll need equal parts of Creme de Menthe; which is a green colored, mint liqueur, Creme de Cocoa; which is a chocolate flavored liqueur made from the cacao bean, heavy cream and ice.

If you want to reduce the calories a bit, you can also use milk or half and half; however, it won't be as creamy. Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker; then shake well.

Strain the drink into a martini glass and serve immediately. I made this cocktail like a martini; however, you can also put all of the ingredients into a blender and make a frozen variety. You can garnish with fresh mint leaves or maraschino cherries.

That's it! My husband and I loved this Grasshopper Cocktail, it was so rich and creamy. Next time, I will make it frozen like a slushy as I'm sure it would taste even better!

This drink makes 1 serving so if you're making for a crowd, just increase all of the measurements by using the sliding scale in the recipe card below. ~Enjoy!
