Make Applebee's Oriental Dressing in the comfort of your own home. It's perfect on salad or sandwiches and the family is going to love it!
My family and I are not fast-food people and even my twelve year old when given the choice of going to McDonald's or Applebee's will choose Applebee's EVERY time.
She just loves the food there and rarely eats off the kid's menu.
In fact, her favorite thing to order are their Wonton Grilled Chicken Tacos made with their Oriental Dressing.
My oldest daughter and I usually gravitate towards the Oriental Chicken Salad or the Oriental Chicken Wrap.
One day I went on a quest to find out how to make the dressing they serve with it and I have to say this recipe is extremely close and so easy to make.
Ingredients Needed
For this recipe you'll need:
- honey
- rice wine vinegar
- mayonnaise: I like to use Hellmann's mayonnaise because it is thick and creamy. If you use another brand, the taste may come out differently.
- Dijon mustard
- sesame oil
How do you make Applebee's Oriental Dressing?
Combine all ingredients together in a bowl and whisk well. That's it!
I used this Oriental Dressing on some mixed greens with grilled chicken, but this Oriental Dressing is now one of our favorite dressings to make at home. Not only is it tasty, you can also use it as a marinade for chicken, pork or seafood. ~Enjoy!

Does the sesame oil have to be toasted? Cold pressed? Refined?
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
No, any sesame oil is fine
dorothy j says
what brand of sesame oil
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
Currently I have House of Tsang in my pantry, but any other pure sesame oil (found in the asian aisle) would work too.
Matt says
I made this recipe exactly as described the first time and found the vinegar a little too strong. Tried just one tablespoon and it’s perfect for me. I eat a lot more salad at home now!!!
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
I'm so glad you like the recipe!
Vanessa says
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
You're welcome Vanessa. This recipe only makes 12 tablespoons (3/4 cup) and will last about 1 week stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
Suzanne says
This looks so good! What a great versatile dressing to keep in the fridge!
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says

Tami says
Exactly what kind or brand of rice wine vinegar did you use. I tried this and mine is not spot on
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
I'm sorry the recipe didn't work well for you. I used Nakano Natural Rice Vinegar
Terry says
I am confused. On the nutrition information it says 31 calories. What size serving is that? Thank you.
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
I'm sorry, this recipe makes 12 tablespoons, so it's 31 calories per 1 tablespoon. I'll adjust the recipe card so it's more clear. Thank you for bringing it to my attention and I hope you enjoy the recipe Terry!
Stephanie Wood says
I've tried this and you're right it's spot on. We love this salad and when I go to Applebee's 99% of the time I get the Oriental salad. We all love it. My Mom had even got my Daddy eating it and he didn't even like Applebee's.
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
Thanks for letting me know you liked the recipe Stephanie, I really appreciate that! My daughter and I get this salad all of the time and I also think they use the same dressing on their Wonton Chicken Tacos..YUM!!!
Kristy says
This dressing is ((almost)) perfect. I like to taste the sesame oil so I upped the amount a little and it was perfect for my tastes. Thanks for this 🙂
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
I'm glad you liked the recipe and added your own spin on it. Thanks for trying and letting me know!
Marjorie Neeley says
I can not find rice wine vinegar. I see either rice vinegar or wine vinegar.
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
Rice vinegar is fine.
Amanda Priano says
Can we use any kind of dijon mustard?
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
Yes, any dijon mustard will be fine.
meg tawney says
any idea of sodium content?
carrieexpktchn@optonline.net says
Hi Meg, When I calculate it out using Calorie Count, it's 40mg Sodium per 1 tablespoon of dressing. I've added it to the nutritional information on the post.
Bonnie Bourdeau says
I use this recipe all the time, but notice that the dressing is a little thin. How can you thicken up
some dressings like this one? Thank you.
carrieexpktchn@optonline.net says
Hi Bonnie, is it too thin on it's own or when mixed with a tossed green salad? This recipe is more of a vinaigrette-type dressing so it would be a little thinner than a creamy version; however, if you're using it with lettuce and the lettuce isn't completely dry (I use a salad spinner to remove excess moisture), the added moisture from washing could thin out your dressing once mixed with the lettuce.
Bonnie Bourdeau says
I always use a salad spinner. Do you have any ideas on how to thicken a dressing when it uses vinegar and oil?
carrieexpktchn@optonline.net says
There is no way to thicken if you're using vinegar and oil; by nature it will be thinner. If you want a thicker dressing, you can try to add mayonnaise (or more mayo in this recipe's case).
