Chili Garlic Green Beans with an Asian flair are one of PF Changs most popular side dishes. Now you can make these tasty vegetables at home!
One of my family's favorite chain restaurants is PF Changs and we each order the same dishes whenever we go. Some of our favorite menu items include Lettuce Wraps, Honey Chicken, Mongolian Beef and Banana Spring Rolls.
However, no matter what we end up getting I always have to order a side of their appetizer Chili Garlic Green Beans. I just LOVE them and could eat these as a meal itself.
Green beans are my favorite vegetable as you can probably tell by the amount of recipes I have for them. Green Beans with Tomato and Garlic, Semi-Homemade Green Bean Casserole, and plain old Sea Salt Roasted Green Beans are my top picks, but now that I've replicated PF Changs version, I think these are my new favorite!
What do you need to make Chili Garlic Green Beans?
For this recipe you'll need fresh green beans, Sesame and Canola oil, garlic, scallions, chili paste, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sugar, cornstarch and water.
If you like your food on the "hot" side, you can also add some red pepper flakes as a garnish. I also recommend that you do not use frozen or canned green beans for this dish.
You may get the flavor, but you'll definitely be missing that "crunch" of a fresh green bean.
How do you partially cook Green Beans?
First you want to blanch or steam your green beans for 1-2 minutes to partially cook them. The sauce you'll be making will cook the beans the rest of the way. Here are directions for both:
- Blanch: Bring a pot of water to a boil; then drop in the green beans. Allow to cook 1-2 minutes; then remove them with a slotted spoon or drain them in a colander and rinse under cold water to stop them from cooking.
- Steam: Add water to the bottom of a double boiler; then add the green beans to the top perforated portion. Put the lid on the pot and bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, allow the beans to steam 1-2 minutes until they turn a bright green; then remove from the heat and run under cold water to stop them from cooking.
How do you prepare PF Changs Chili Garlic Green Beans?
First, you'll want to make the sauce by combining chili paste, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, cornstarch and water in a bowl and whisk until smooth; set aside.
Next, heat the oils in a large skillet; then add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the green beans and scallions, along with the sauce and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens and the green beans are coated.
Remove the green beans, place them in a serving bowl and garnish with extra red pepper flakes, if desired.
That's it! These green beans tasted just like the version at PF Changs and I know I'll be making these all the time. Serve them with your favorite Asian meal or eat them all by themselves (I won't judge!). ~Enjoy!

This recipe was very delicious. The whole family loved it. I will be making it again. Just a note. I think the steps may be out of order in your recipe. It was a little confusing following it. You may want to read through it again.
