Fried Green Cherry Tomatoes served with an Avocado Ranch Dipping Sauce are a quick and easy way to utilize homegrown tomatoes.
I love waking up on a Sunday morning, having a cup of tea with my husband before the kids get up and finding a movie on tv to watch while the house is quiet. A few Sunday's ago, that movie happened to be the 1991 film, Fried Green Tomatoes written by Fannie Flag.
I just love this movie and can watch it over and over again, but the thought of making fried green tomatoes intrigued me. I had tried them out years ago and loved them, but never made them again.
No real reason, I guess I just forgot. So when my father in law asked me to go pick more of his tomatoes, I grabbed some green ones this time too.
I thought a dipping sauce to go with nicely with these and had recently been to Chili's restaurant where I tried some of their avocado dip they served with their southwestern egg rolls.
So I cheated here a little bit and made this simple Avocado Ranch dip using bottled ranch dressing.
Ingredients Needed
To make the tomatoes you'll need:
- green cherry tomatoes
- all purpose flour
- an egg + splash of water or milk (for the egg wash)
- Italian flavored breadcrumbs
- Canola oil for frying
For the Avocado Ranch Dipping Sauce you'll need:
- avocado
- store bought creamy Ranch dressing
How do you make Fried Green Cherry Tomatoes?
Start by preparing three separate bowls for the flour, egg wash and breadcrumbs. First dip the tomato halves into the flour, then into the egg wash, and finally the breadcrumbs.
Repeat for all pieces. Heat some oil in a frying pan, just enough to coat the bottom of the pan.
Add the tomatoes and fry 2-3 minutes per side until lightly browned. Remove the tomatoes from the pan and drain on paper towels or brown paper bags to remove excess oil.
Next, cut the avocado in half to remove the pit. Scoop out the insides and add to a mini food processor or blender. Add the ranch dressing and pulse until well blended and creamy. Serve immediately with dipping sauce.
These Fried Green Cherry Tomatoes were crispy and delicious and the cool flavor of the creamy dip against the piping hot tomatoes was incredible! These would make a great appetizer or side dish. ~Enjoy!

We. Learned out our cherry tomato plants ahead of the freeze and I kept about 100 of the green tomatoes. I just knew I wanted to try these fried. The absolute best fried green tomato ever! I made the avocado ranch and added a grilled jalapeƱo to the recipe to kick up the heat a bit. I also made a remoulade and dill dip - because variety is the spice of life. All were great options for these tart delectable tomatoes! Thanks for the recipe.

have you thought of the airfryer to reheat the fried green tomatoes.
Carrie's Experimental Kitchen says
I'm sure you could use one; however, I don't own one so I'm not sure how long they would take.

Carrie - did you get a recipe for Ranch dressing? Try looking up Best Vegan Ranch dressing. I've been making a version of this recipe (I cheat and use regular or light Hellman"s Mayo) because there isn't milk in the recipe. Also try adding some of the suggestions posted in comments (splash of apple cider vinegar for example) You can halve or double the recipe as needed.

Thanks Gayle

curious - it says 12 in. Green cherry tomatoes -- I am unfamiliar with the meaning of 'in.' Please enlighten me. Thanks! I know, when you tell me, I'll probably say "Of Course! Don't know why I didn't think of that."

Hi Laura, nope it was just a typo on my end. SO sorry about that!!! I switched recipe cards and some recipes had some glitches. It's just 12 green cherry tomatoes. š
