Fresh steamed green beans tossed in a sweet and spicy hot honey and butter sauce. A simple way to add a little heat to your vegetables!

green beans in a skillet

If there is one vegetable that we eat most often it's probably green beans. They're always on the weekly shopping list and make an excellent, vegetable side dish.

Because of their mild flavor you can add so many ingredients to add variations too. Whether you steam, sauté or roast, these Hot Honey Green Beans will be a new favorite. ~Enjoy!

Suggested Equipment

  • Double Boiler Pot
  • Tongs

Ingredients Needed

To make this recipe, you're going to need the following ingredients:

Fresh Green Beans: Fresh is best so you can cook them on the al dente side for a little crispy bite. However, you can also use defrosted frozen or drained and rinsed canned green beans.

I usually get green beans that have been trimmed already to save time, but before cooking you'll need to trim the ends first. Haricot Verts or French Green Beans can also be used in this recipe.

Hot Honey: Most hot honey is also gluten free, but check the ingredients on specific brands.

Butter

Kosher Salt

What is Hot Honey?

Hot honey is a honey that has been infused with vinegar and chili peppers. It's sweet and spicy and adds a ton of flavor to your recipes.

The brand we use comes from Trader Joe's, but you can find it in your local grocery store or on Amazon.

How do you make Hot Honey Green Beans

There are several ways to cook green beans: steam, roast, sauté or microwave. For this recipe, I steamed the beans first.

Add the green beans to the top of a double boiler pot; then add water to the bottom pot. You'll want to make sure the water comes below the top perforated pan.

Place the lid on the pot; then bring the water to a boil and cook 3-5 minutes until the green beans are tender, but a little al dente.

Drain the water from the bottom pot while keeping the steamed green beans in the top perforated section.

Return the bottom pot to the stove, add the butter and hot honey; then allow the butter melt over medium heat. Add the steamed green beans and salt; then toss to coat.

Serving suggestions

You can serve these Hot Honey Green Beans with just about any main entree, but some of our favorite recipes with honey are Pork Chops in a Honey Mustard Cream Sauce, Skillet Honey Maple Ham Steak, Skillet Honey Tangerine Chicken.
