These cake balls are a super easy and fun treat to make that celebrate all of the United States patriotic holidays including Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Independence Day.
Who doesn't love an easy dessert recipe; especially during Summer celebrations. These Patriotic Cake Balls are guaranteed to be enjoyed by all!
We all deserve a little fun with family and friends now that covid restrictions have been modified or lifted. The best part about this dessert is that there are three occasions in the coming months to enjoy them: Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.
One of the things I love most about this cake ball recipe is that you can either use a store bought cake, make a cake from scratch or prepare a boxed cake mix; which is what I did.
What flavor cake should I use?
You can use any flavor cake you'd like! My family loves carrot cake so I used a boxed mix, but you can use vanilla, chocolate or even fun flavors like strawberry, lemon or funfetti!
How much cake do I need?
You'll need the equivalent to the following sizes:
- One 9"x13" cake pan
- Two 8"x8" cake rounds
- Two 9"x9" cake round
- One 12-cup bundt pan
How do you make Patriotic Cake Balls?
For this recipe you'll need prepared cake, candy melts (red, white, blue), sprinkles (red, white, blue and candy star) and prepared frosting. If you're making the cake, prepare according to instructions and allow to cool.
You can make this the day before; then keep covered tightly in the refrigerator until you're ready to make the cake balls.
Make frosting by adding butter, confectioners sugar, milk and vanilla extract to a large bowl; then mix until combined with a hand or stand mixer. Crumble the cake in the bowl over the frosting and combine using a mixer on low speed until all ingredients have been incorporated.
Next, form the dough into balls approximately one tablespoon in size and put the balls on a sheet pan that's lined with parchment paper.
Add the white candy melts to a microwave safe bowl and heat in 30 second increments until melted. If the chocolate is too thick, you can add a small amount of milk to thin it out. You can also use white chocolate bars or chips.
Put a ball of cake in the melted white chocolate rolling it around the bowl to coat it evenly. Transfer the coated ball back to the pan covered with parchment paper and allow the chocolate to dry. To speed up the process you can also place the pan in the refrigerator until the chocolate has fully set.
What is the best way to decorate the cake balls?
Melt about a half cup each of the blue and red candy melts in the microwave in separate bowls in 30 second increments. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of the dried cake balls; then top with sprinkles and candy stars.
You can use this fun Wilton Red, White and Blue Candy Bark Set for Patriotic Treats found on Amazon or any other festive sprinkles you can purchase locally.
How fun are these Patriotic Cake Balls? And so easy to make that the kids would love to help! Keep them stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
