Calabrese Patties made with ground beef, sweet Italian sausage, sun dried tomatoes and Mozzarella cheese.; then placed on top of a bun with a Sun Dried Tomato Dijonaise.
Seriously. If you want to try at least one new burger recipe this year, these Calabrese Patties must be on your on your to-make list! I found this recipe in an old cookbook years ago and tore out the page.
Unfortunately, I can't remember which one because the name wasn't imprinted on the page. Oops! In any event, these patties are phenomenal with flavors that come from the Calabria region of Italy.
Since Memorial Day is right around the corner, along with grilling season, I wanted to share a new burger recipe and was glad I made these to start with.
Especially since I only have a handful of burger recipes like these Italian Cannellini Bean Burgers, Grilled Chicken Burgers with Copycat Chick-Fil-A Sauce, and Garlic Head Mushroom & Scallion Burger.
What is a pattie?
A pattie or patty is a small flat cake of minced or finely chopped food, especially meat. It's most commonly referred to as a hamburger. Since this recipe has ground beef, it is technically a form of a pattie; however, it also contains sausage.
What do you need to make Calabrese Patties?
For this recipe you'll need ground beef, sweet Italian sausage, egg, sun dried tomatoes, fresh basil, Italian breadcrumbs, shredded Mozzarella cheese and hamburger buns or rolls.
Start by adding all ingredients to a bowl and mix well. I used ground beef and ground pork sausage, but you can use ground chicken or turkey products if you'd like, though it might not taste exactly the same.
What is the best way to cook the patties?
Form four patties; then you can either broil or grill them. To broil, place on a broiler pan in a preheated oven and cook for 6-7 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F.
For grilling, place the burgers on a preheated 425 degree F grill and cook 6-7 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F.
The original recipe called to add the patties to a bun and top with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, but I took it a step further and omitted the toppings and made a tasty sun dried tomato dijonaise.
How do you make Sun Dried Tomato Dijonaise?
To make this dijonaise you'll need sun dried tomatoes, mayonnaise, garlic powder, Dijon mustard and a bit of water. Add all ingredients together in a small bowl and mix until smooth.
How do you assemble the Calabrese Pattie?
Now it's time to put the burger together! Add one cooked pattie to the bottom a bun or your favorite type of roll. Next, dollop some of the sun dried tomato dijonaise on top and spread evenly; then top with the bun.
OMG! These Calabrese Patties were amazing and so full of flavor. I cooked this batch under the broiler because there was still a bit of snow on our deck in NJ. However, I can't wait to try these on the grill as it will give it a little more of that charred flavor.
These burgers would be perfect to serve during Summer outdoor gatherings like graduation parties, Memorial Day, Fourth of July or just on a lazy Sunday afternoon. ~Enjoy!
