Fresh green beans slowly steamed in a skillet; then tossed with slices of fresh garlic and topped with shaved Pecorino Romano cheese.
If there is one vegetable that I could eat weekly without fail, it would be fresh green beans. They have such a mild taste and you can easily add other flavors to enhance them, like these simple garlic green beans.
Don't get me wrong, I know many prefer frozen or even canned green beans; which you can also use in this recipe. However, fresh adds a bit of a crunch to these vegetables; especially if you don't over cook them.
You can cook these garlic green beans on top of the stove in a skillet, are ready in under 15 minutes and serves 4 people. ~Enjoy!
Suggested Equipment
Ingredients Needed
To make these garlic green beans you're going to need the following ingredients:
Fresh Green Beans: I use green beans that have already been trimmed so add on a little extra time if you're trimming your own before use. Rinse them under cold water; then drain on paper towels to remove excess water before cooking.
Water
Kosher Salt
Black Pepper
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Thinly Sliced Garlic
Shaved Pecorino Romano Cheese (optional): We garnished our green beans with a little shaved cheese before serving, but you can omit altogether.
Substitutions
Instead of fresh green beans you can use haricot verts; which are thinner than green beans and do not need to be trimmed.
For frozen green beans, you'll need to defrost them first and drain any excess water before making this recipe. If using canned green beans, again they will need to be drained first before using.
For frozen or canned green beans, you can omit the water in this recipe as the green beans will already been soft.
How do you make Garlic Green Beans?
Add the water and green beans to the skillet, cover with a lid and cook on low heat for 6-8 minutes until the water has evaporated and the green beans are al dente.
Add the oil, garlic, salt and pepper and toss to coat; cooking for 1-2 minutes until the garlic starts to soften and the aroma is released.
Serve the green beans in the skillet or place in a serving bowl; then top with shaved cheese (if desired).
