Change up your ordinary apple pie with this version made with a sour cream apple filling topped with buttery streusel.
One of my all time favorite desserts is apple pie because I just love the combination of apples and cinnamon. So when I found an old recipe for this Sour Cream Apple Pie in my recipe box, I just had to try it.
I go through my old recipe box about twice a year, selecting new recipes to try and remake with my own twist. Some were old family favorites and some were given to me by friends.
This Sour Cream Apple Pie was nicely typed out for me, but I have NO idea who gave it to me; nor did I remember trying it. I did a little research online and it's also known as Amish Sour Cream Apple Pie.
It sounded different so I decided to make myself. Of course, I took a few shortcuts because recipes need to be as easy as possible right?
How do you make Sour Cream Apple Pie?
For this recipe you'll need refrigerated pie crust, all purpose flour, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon salt, sour cream, vanilla extract, an egg, and McIntosh apples.
I like to use these types of apples when baking because they are softer and cook more quickly and evenly; especially in pies.
Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees F; then line the pie crust on the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate and crimp the edges. You can make your own pie crust; however, I'm a cook, not a baker and my crust never comes out right.
It's easier just to purchase the already made ones from the grocery store. One of these days I'll get around to perfecting the recipe I have, but in the meantime this recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction looks good if you'd like to make it from scratch.
Add the egg, sour cream, vanilla extract to a bowl and whisk until smooth. Next, add the flour, granulated sugar, salt and ground cinnamon to the bowl; then mix until well blended. Peel and core the apples; then dice them into 1-inch pieces and place them in the bowl and mix well.
Pour the batter into the pie crust; then spread evenly. Put the pie plate on a baking sheet and place in the oven; then bake for 40 minutes. I like to do this to avoid any drippings from the pie getting into the oven. While the pie is baking, you can make the streusel topping.
How do you make the Streusel Topping?
To make the topping you'll need light brown sugar, melted butter, ground cinnamon and flour. Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and mix well until crumbly.
When the pie is finished after the 40 minutes take it out of the oven and sprinkle the streusel topping over the top, place back in the oven and cook for another 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow the pie to cool completely before storing it covered in the refrigerator; then cut it into eight slices and serve!
My family wasn't sure if they were going to like this Sour Cream Apple Pie, but turns out they LOVED it. I do have to say that when they tried a piece of it warm, it wasn't as good as when it was cold. Personally, I don't like warm pie anyway so it was great for me.
Like I said, I'm not sure where this recipe originated from. Originally, it called for nutmeg, but cinnamon always tastes better to me; especially with apples. It was such an easy recipe to make and I'm sure I'll be making this one again soon. ~Enjoy!
