Oven roasted beef brisket made Italian style with oregano, garlic and fire roasted tomatoes makes a tasty, comforting family meal.
My family loves beef brisket. In fact, it's what we usually make on New Year's Day. I've made it several ways and so far Tuscan style has been my favorite.
That is until now when I recently made this Italian Style Beef Brisket. It was delicious and so simple to make I couldn't wait to share! And I'll DEFINITELY be making this again soon.
What is brisket?
Brisket is a tough cut of meat so when cooked long and slow, it gives the meat a chance to break down into a tender cut of meat. That's why braising the meat in a Dutch oven on top of the stove, in a crock pot or cooking in an oven at a lower temperature is best.
Personally, I prefer oven roasting the best.
Brisket is used not only on its own, but it can also be cured like with corned beef. Brisket is also a common main menu item during Jewish holidays so I thought I'd experiment a little and throw in some Italian influence. I'm so glad I did because everyone LOVED this recipe!
What cut of brisket should I purchase?
You can purchase beef brisket in two different cuts. The Flat Cut or the first cut and the Point Cut; which is the thicker second cut of the meat.
The flat cut is my preference and is also the most common in your supermarket. It's long and thin with a thick layer of fat on top; which keeps the meat moist when cooked. It's also the best cut for slicing.
You will want to remove some of the fat though by slicing it off before cooking, but make sure you leave about ¼-inch to ½- inch to help keep the meat moist.
How do you make Italian Style Beef Brisket?
For this recipe you'll need a flat cut beef brisket, Canola oil, Kosher salt, black pepper, sweet paprika, dried oregano, garlic powder, fire roasted diced tomatoes and chicken broth.
Combine the salt, pepper, paprika, oregano and garlic powder in a small dish and mix until blended. Add the oil to a Dutch oven or oven safe pot and heat over medium high heat. I prefer a cast iron Dutch oven as it holds in the heat evenly.
Trim any excess fat from the meat and discard; then rub the spices over both sides of the meat. Place in the Dutch oven and brown 3-5 minutes per side.
Next, add the tomatoes and chicken broth to the pot, cover with a lid and place the entire pot into a 325 degree F oven for 3 hours. After the second hour, you can also add some vegetables like carrots and onions; then spoon the sauce over the meat and cook for the remaining hour.
Carefully remove the pot from the oven (with pot holders!), place the meat on a cutting board, slice diagonally across the grain; then place the meat on a serving platter. Spoon the sauce with any added vegetables over the meat; then serve.
This Italian Style Beef Brisket was amazing and super flavorful. We made some creamy mashed potatoes to serve with it; which made soaking up those flavorful vegetables and tomatoes even better.
Because this oven roasted beef brisket does take longer to cook, it's best prepared for Sunday family dinner or holiday entertaining.
