Weekends in the Fall are for college football games and picky foods (aka appetizers!). And one of our guilty pleasures are pizza rolls.

You just pop them in the oven and the crispy outer dough with the hot, melty cheese is a definite favorite. Years ago I made something similar in Stromboli form so I decided to make one again for pizza night.

This Pizza Roll Stromboli tastes just like traditional pizza, only in a different form. It makes 12 slices so it's perfect to serve as a snack or dinner.

What is a stromboli?

Stromboli is pizza or bread dough that has been filled with cheese and sometimes meat and vegetables. It's different than a calzone; which usually contains ricotta cheese as well.

Equipment

  • Nonstick Baking Sheet
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Serrated Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Serving Platter

Ingredients Needed

For this recipe you'll need the following ingredients:

Pizza Dough: I use store bought pizza dough, but you can make your own or purchase one from your local pizzeria.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Marinara Sauce: Any sauce will do. You can use homemade or jar; whichever you prefer.

Mozzarella Cheese: In this recipe, shredded cheese works well so it's evenly distributed, but you can use small diced fresh Mozzarella cheese too.

Dried Oregano

Garlic Powder

Cooking Spray

How do you make Pizza Roll Stromboli?

Start by bringing the pizza dough to room temperature; then preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Drizzle some olive oil onto a baking sheet; then stretch out the dough until it's rectangular in shape.

Spread the sauce over the dough; leaving a 1-inch border around the sides. Top the sauce with cheese, oregano and garlic powder; then roll the dough towards you forming a log.

Pinch the ends together to seal in the cheese; then place seam side down on the baking sheet. Spray the top generously with cooking spray; then bake 20 minutes or until the top is puffed up and golden brown.

Remove the Stromboli from the oven, cool for 5 minutes; then slice into twelve pieces. Place on a serving platter and serve hot.
