Flatbread made with your favorite pizza dough, shredded Mozzarella cheese, Italian sausage, apples and fresh rosemary. Enjoy for a quick weeknight dinner or game day snack!
One of the first recipes I shared on the blog back in 2011 is for a stuffed bread when I was hosting an Apple Themed Bunco Party. The recipe was DELICIOUS, but it was time for a makeover.
Recently, I decided to turn this bread into Sausage and Apple Flatbread pizza and boy was it AMAZING!
Friday night is flatbread or pizza night at our house; especially when you're tired from a long workweek. It's simple to make, can be ready in about ½ hour and there are so many options.
Some of our favorites are Spinach and Artichoke Flatbread, Bacon & Cheddar Flatbread and Pumpkin Ricotta Flatbread, but check out this roundup with some great flatbread and pizza recipes too! I'm not gonna lie, this one with sausage and apples is one of my new favorites!
What's the difference between Flatbread and Pizza?
Technically, flatbread uses a dough with unleavened bread; whereas a pizza has yeast. However, when I make a flatbread, I generally use a pizza dough and roll it extra thin so it's super crispy on the bottom.
Equipment Needed
Here are some small kitchen equipment items you'll need to make this Sausage and Apple Flatbread:
- Baking Sheet or Pizza Stone
- Cutting Board
- Apple Peeler/Corer
- Chef Knife
- Nonstick Skillet
- Pastry/Pizza Roller (optional) I prefer using my clean hands
- Pizza Cutter
Personally, I keep an old sheet pan on hand to make my pizza. It makes the crust crispy and slides off easily when cooked.
Ingredients Needed
For this recipe you'll need the following ingredients:
- pizza dough (room temperature)
- shredded mozzarella cheese
- ground italian sausage (i used sweet)
- apples
- fresh rosemary
- extra virgin olive oil (evoo)
If you can't find ground sausage, you can use links with the casings removed. The pizza dough is easier to roll out when it is at room temperature so remove it from refrigeration 30 minutes prior to rolling.
Being from northern NJ, we have great pizza and can purchase frozen dough at our local grocery store or even get one from our local pizzerias. If you prefer to make your own dough, here is a great recipe.
How do you make Sausage and Apple Flatbread?
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Add the oil to a medium nonstick skillet and heat over medium high heat.
Add the sausage; breaking it down to small pieces while browning until it is completely cooked; approximately 5 minutes.
Peel, core and dice the apples into small pieces; then add them along with the chopped rosemary to the sausage. Simmer 2-3 minutes until the apples start to get soft.
Add some oil to your sheet pan; then roll out the dough into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick. I like to cover the dough on both sides with the oil. You'll also want to make sure there is some oil on the pan under the dough so that the crust crisps up to slide off easily after cooking.
Top with shredded cheese leaving a ½-inch border around all sides. Next, add the sausage mixture to cover the cheese. Place in the oven and cook 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is hot and bubbly and golden brown.
Serving Suggestions
To serve this Sausage and Apple Flatbread as an appetizer or game day snack, cut it into 16 pieces using a pizza cutter or sharp chefs knife.
If serving for dinner, cut into 8 pieces. My family loved this flatbread and the flavors were incredibly delicious.
