French bread pizza made with crusty Italian Ciabatta bread layered with fresh tomatoes, basil and slices of fresh Mozzarella cheese.

caprese french bread

Technically this recipe should be called Ciabatta bread pizza, but as most people know, pizza baked on a loaf of bread is called French Bread Pizza.

Caprese-style recipes are one of my favorite go-to combinations. You can make a variety of recipes using fresh tomatoes, basil and cheese like stuffed chicken or pork, appetizers, sandwiches and breakfast dishes.

Making French bread pizza is a deliciously quick way to make lunch or dinner. Slice it into smaller pieces and you can even have a tasty game day snack! ~Enjoy!

Suggested Equipment

  • Sheet Pan
  • Bread Knife
  • Small Bowl
  • Cutting Board
  • Knife
  • Serving Platter

Ingredients Needed

To make this recipe you're going to need the following ingredients:

12-inch Loaf Ciabatta Bread: You can use any loaf of bread including French bread, whole grain or Semolina bread.

Mayonnaise: Please use a mayo that is not a dressing(Miracle Whip, etc) as it will alter the flavor. I prefer Hellman's for it's thick, creamy texture.

Garlic Powder: Or if you like it extra garlicky, you can mix in some minced fresh garlic!

Sliced Tomatoes: You can use any fresh tomato but Roma, Heirloom or Campari tomatoes are most flavorful.

Fresh Basil: You're going to need to chop some; then use some fresh leaves as garnish once the pizzas are baked.

Mozzarella Cheese: Fresh sliced is best, but you can use any variety like Buffalo or shredded.

Kosher Salt

Black Pepper

How do you make Caprese French Bread Pizza?

Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees F; then line a sheet pan with aluminum foil.

Slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally using a bread knife forming two halves; then place them on the sheet pan.

In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and garlic powder; then mix until smooth. Evenly spread the mayonnaise mixture on top of each half of the bread.

Next, add your sliced tomatoes on top of the bread along with the cheese; then top with the chopped basil and season with salt and pepper.

Place the sheet pans in the oven and bake 15-20 minutes until the cheese has melted and the bread is crispy; then remove from the oven.

Cut each half into four pieces; then garnish with fresh basil leaves and place on a cutting board or serving platter.
