Enjoy the flavor of a classic Margarita at home made with Patron Silver Tequila, Contreau, fresh squeezed lime juice and simple syrup.
It's Thursday at 10:30am. I look at my food holiday calendar and see that February 22nd is Margarita day and realize that I don't have a recipe for one of my favorite summer cocktails on my site and think "It's time to remedy that situation!".
I was never a huge fan of tequila or any kind of spirit alcohol for that matter. I've only every preferred beer and now red wine; though for the early part of my adult life, I drank beer because being in college and living on your own at 22, beer was cheap and basically all I could afford.
Then about 24 years ago, I decided to finally give up smoking (yes, I am a former smoker) and got hypnotized. Amazingly it worked, but the funny thing was that I must have associated smoking with drinking beer, because around the same time, I couldn't stand the taste of beer anymore either (and still don't to this day!).
That's when I switched to red wine and an occasional what I like to call "fruity" drinks like frozen Daiquiris, Bay Breeze or Mai Tai's. It wasn't until the last couple of years that I tried a Margarita and actually liked it this time.
I'm not sure why I didn't like them before, but a nice, cold Margarita on a hot Summer day with some homemade tortilla chips and salsa tastes amazing! Anyway, so I decided on a Thursday morning that I would make a Patron Margarita to share with you.
I also wanted to have it logged here on the blog because this is usually where my family and friends come to look first for a recipe before reaching out to me and it's also an easy place for me to find my own recipes when I'm not home too.
How do you make a margarita?
This recipe makes two drinks and you'll need four ingredients: Tequila, Contreau; which is an orange flavored triple sec liquor, fresh squeezed lime juice and simple syrup; which can be made by bringing equal parts of granulated sugar and water to a boil; then allow it to cool.
What type of Patron Tequila is used?
I opted to use Patron Silver Tequila to make these Margaritas because it's "Go Big or Go Home". Besides I get less of a headache if the alcohol is top shelf. I also like fresh limes so you get some of that pulp in there too. Makes it extra "limey". Is that a word?
I've also used key lime juice when the limes aren't fresh and it tastes amazing!
What are different ways to serve a margarita?
- Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake well. Line the rim of two glasses with fresh lime juice; then dip in sea salt. Add the Margarita to the glass without ice cubes or with; which would be called "on the rocks"
- Pour all ingredients into a blender with ice and blend to make a frozen Margarita.
This Patron Margarita was light, refreshing and I can't wait to drink these by the pool this summer. But if you don't want to wait until then, try them for National Margarita Day or Mardi Gras. ~Enjoy!
