Usually on one day of the weekend, we'll have a "big breakfast" with the girls. Most of the time they just want "dippy eggs", bacon and toast.
However, making a breakfast strata like this one made with ham, apples and Cheddar cheese is an easier option because everything is included in one pan; then baked.
Super easy, quick and delicious! This recipe serves four people, but you can also double or triple this recipe to make in a large casserole dish for a larger crowd.
Though I've made only a couple of strata recipes before, I think this one is my new favorite!
Equipment
Ingredients Needed
For this recipe you'll need the following ingredients:
Melted Butter
Large Eggs
Heavy Cream: You can substitute milk or half & half in this recipe.
Chives: I used dried chives, but fresh chopped chives are great too.
Kosher Salt
Black Pepper
Ham: You can use chopped deli ham or leftover ham from last nights dinner.
Apples: Peel and core the apples; then dice into small pieces so they cook evenly. I used McIntosh apples, but you can use your favorite.
Italian Bread: Day old loaf bread works best for this recipe as the custard will help to soften the bread; especially if preparing the night before. You can also use challah, French or Ciabatta bread. You'll want to cut them into 1-inch cubes. This recipe calls for 3 cups of diced bread; which is about ½ loaf of bread.
Shredded Cheddar Cheese: We liked Cheddar cheese in this recipe, but you can also use Swiss, Havarti or Gruyere.
How do I make Ham, Apple & Cheddar Breakfast Strata?
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F; then coat a 2-quart baking dish with the melted butter.
Combine the eggs, cream, chives, salt and pepper in a large bowl; then whisk until blended. Next add the diced ham, apples, bread and cheese.
Mix with a spoon; then add the mixture to the baking dish and top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the strata has puffed up, the custard is no longer runny and the top is golden brown.
Remove from the oven and serve hot immediately.
Make Ahead Instructions
